Excerpts:
From page 42: Ms. Gertie had no tolerance for whining and she enjoyed taunting other residents who continually complained. When she wanted something, she would yell curse words and threats. Luckily for us, the 3 nurses she aimed her fists at happened to be the fastest gals on our unit. In another stroke of good luck, we found and confiscated the knife under her pillow before she tried to use it. Overall her transition went pretty well…we soon found the way to her heart with coffee and sweet snacks. I am not above bribing folks with food when the situation warrants it.
from page 57: Then there was an obstinate elderly man who was known for being oppositional. One day he suffered a fainting episode. Sally, Dell and I rushed to his room to revive him. After a few moments, his eyes fluttered slightly but he would not respond to our questioning. Sally gently shook his arm and shouted, “Mr. Gregg, Mr. Gregg, can you hear me?” Without moving or opening his eyes, Mr. Gregg said clearly, “No!”
