Original Vignette: The Plight of an Autumn Leaf

This vignette was originally entered into the 540 writers anual contest. I’m posting it here for your reading pleasure.

Early one Saturday morning in late September, Hannah stepped out onto the front porch with her 6-year-old daughter Katie. The wind chimes sang their happy tune in the gentle breeze, blowing from the southeast. Hannah stepped up to the bench to sit and write, while watching her little girl at play. “Mommy, look! There’s a leaf on the edge of the bench! Please don’t crush it.”

Hannah picked up the tiny leaf by its stem and sent it sailing across the front yard. “Watch what happens as the wind picks it up and carries it away, Katie-did.”

“Aww! Look at that poor leaf, riding the wind to the tree. The wind just tossed it away like a piece of garbage!” Katie burst into tears as the leaf skittered under the pine tree.

What’s wrong, sweetheart?” Hannah wrapped her daughter in her warm embrace.

“The leaf will die and be crushed to bits!” The little girl sobbed into her mother’s shirt.

“Shhh, wait! Watch what happens! The leaf won’t be crushed, God will save it, you’ll see! I don’t know how it happens, but turn around and watch. I want to see where it goes, myself!” Mother and daughter held hands as a frigid gust of wind picked up the leaf and wrapped it around the top branch of the tree, where it lay in a dejected heap. As they stood watching in awe, the leaf unwound itself from the branch and began to wave in the breeze

“Wow! It’s almost as if a ferry wind picked up the leaf and placed it on top of its home tree!” Katie bounced with glee at the sight of the leaf glowing bright yellow in the sunlight. The chimes sang their happy song loud enough for the whole world to hear.

“Our Heavenly Father sent that chilly breeze to protect the little leaf, and now it’ll shine throughout the fall and winter, to let us know that it is safe and sound. Now you’ll have something exciting to tell your friends at school next week!”

“May I draw a picture of the leaf for your story?”

“You most certainly may! Why don’t we go inside? You get your notebook and color pencils, so you can draw the picture while we write the story together!” Katie ran back in the house with her mother following close at her heals.
